The Historic St. Helena Wine Trail in Napa Valley

We are guessing that Napa Valley must be on every wine lover’s bucket list of wine regions to visit. Besides being the most celebrated wine growing region in the U.S., it is also one of the most diverse in the world.  Some of the best wines in the world, ranging from Cabernets to Merlots and Chardonnays are produced here, in a spectacularly beautiful natural setting. Napa Valley is home to roughly 475 wineries making more than 1000 wine brands, and about 95% of these are family-owned.

We realize that it is not easy to pick favorites among these, so we have curated five wineries on the St.Helena Wine Trail. So gear up for your trip with your VinGardeValise® to bring back some world-class wines back home with you, safely.

The picturesque town of St. Helena is in the heart of Napa Valley with heritage wineries, boutique wineries, and family-owned estates, with Michelin-starred restaurants for some fine dining, art galleries, and fashion boutiques.

Each one of the wineries on this trail is unique, producing award-winning wines and set in gorgeous surroundings. More than three dozen varieties of grapes grow here, including Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more.

Look forward to some memorable wine tasting, exclusive wine tours to wine cellars and naturally, wine in your VGV® even as you take in the scenic landscapes.

Let’s go to St.Helena!

Peju Province Winery

Established in 1983, Peju Province Winery is a family-owned winery located in Rutherford, set amidst verdant gardens with breathtaking views of the Vaca Mountain Range, Mayacamas and Mount St. Helena around it. The winery has four estates across Rutherford, Calistoga, and Pope Valley, and produces single varietal and blended wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, dessert wines, fortified wines, French Colombard, Petit Verdot, Rose, sparkling wines, Syrah and Zinfandel.

The highlight of Peju estate is its 50-foot Tower tasting room, with its unique architecture.  Guests can enjoy four of their current wines in a stylish setting, listening to the story of each wine, the winery’s history, and its winemaking tradition. According to them, visitors are treated to “Vintertainment” from their wine pourer and wine ambassador, Alan Arnpole.

The website welcomes visitors with the following message:

Peju is a family-owned and operated, sustainably farmed winery located in the heart of the Napa Valley. For more than 30 years, we’ve been welcoming guests to our estate. We invite you to stroll our beautiful gardens, enjoy our contemporary artwork, taste our award-winning wines and sign up for one of our interactive kitchen experiences. (…) We offer a wine experience unlike any other as guests sample four current release wines in a presentation style setting that is both informative and entertaining.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

At Peju, you can look forward to warm hospitality and fine dining experience. Don’t miss the stunning stained glass window in the Tower tasting room! At the entrance of the highway, the winery welcomes visitors with its huge 35-foot rabbit, Bunny Foo-Foo. The seven estate vineyards occupy over 500 acres, growing classic Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery uses traditional techniques with modern technology to produce wines that represent the terroir.

Sequoia Grove Winery

Founded in 1979, Sequoia Grove Winery is family-owned and is located off Highway 29, a mile north of the Oakville Grocery. The winery’s tasting room is a tastefully renovated 155-year old barn in a grove of Sequoia trees, from where the winery gets its name.

The entrance to the tasting room has two large wooden casks or “puncheons,” which were made in France and assembled here. These hold specific lots of wine. The “Lightning skylight” in the roof lets in natural light, creating a friendly and relaxing atmosphere in which to taste wines. The bar is carved from a single piece of wood.
The winery’s Bordeaux-style wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Red Blend, Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. While the Winemaker series has a diverse selection of wines made at Sequoia Grove, the Vineyard Series wines showcase top vineyards across Napa Valley and the Napa Valley Wines are sourced from the winery’s estate vineyards and other top vineyards.

Quoting from the winery’s website:

Our commitment to quality begins with growing the very best grapes. With more than 30 years of wine growing experience in Napa Valley, we have a profound knowledge of our vineyards, growers, and climate. We take an artisan, small-lot approach in the winery, with the goal of producing wines with exceptional balance and finesse that offer an authentic expression of the varietal, vintage, and a sense of place.

Well known for its hospitality, the winery welcomes visitors for guided tours and special events the year round. Choose from their tasting experiences and relish their wines with views of the foothills and vineyards and participate in their ongoing events.
