Tee-time and wine: Where to wine and golf

Is it coincidence that golf players are invariably wine connoisseurs?

Apparently not, if we go by the number of wineries with golf courses that invite you to chip and sip. In general, golfers enjoy the good life, fine dining, and travel. Taking a trip that includes wine tasting, gourmet meals in the vineyards, combined with 18 holes of golf is obviously the dream itinerary. Incidentally, golf’s first ever trophy was called the “Claret Jug.” Coincidence? We think not!

Today, we are teeing off to some of the top class championship golf courses set among the world’s best wine producing regions in the United States. We will be traveling through California, Texas, and Georgia.

California is well-known as the cradle of the American wine industry. Georgia may be the Peach State, but produces award-winning wines and is the national leader in the production of wine from the Muscadine grape. Texas, the Lone Star State, has a long history of winemaking, and is the site of the first vineyard established in North America by Franciscan priests circa 1662.

If you are a keen golfer who enjoys chipping and sipping, we suggest you pack your VinGardeValise® and prepare to enjoy the best wine trail ever. Get ready to be dazzled by quaint heritage wineries, award-winning estate wines, and superlative golf courses.

Let’s go!

Flat Creek Estate Winery and Vineyard

Established in 1998 by Rick and Madelyn Naber, Flat Creek Winery and Vineyard is located twenty miles east of Marble Falls, amid rolling hills in Central Texas and occupies eighty acres of land. The first grapes were planted on 1 April 2000, with 60 people, 6000 plants, in 6 hours on 6 acres of vines. Today, they have grown into 20 acres, producing 10,000 cases of wine with varietals including Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and several Portuguese Port varietals across multiple vineyard blocks.

At this winery, you can enjoy wine tastings, vineyard walks, tours of the production facility, disc golf on their championlevel golf course, and lunch or dinner as you enjoy the picturesque surroundings. Their urban wine bar, Enoteca, offers their signature flights and self-guided wine flights with a delicious menu, along with live music.

The Flat Creek Estate Disc Golf Course is a championship disclevel golf course and one of its kind, designed by John Houck of Houck Design for players of all levels. Tournament hosting is available, along with “wine and disc” and “dine and disc” packages where you can play golf, sip wine and enjoy great food.

According to their website,

“Rick’s expertise and energy set the pace for all involved.  His inertia keeps the Flat Creek world spinning whether understanding the quirks of TABC codes or trouble-shooting daily challenges. Madelyn is truly a “Woman Gone Wine. Her commitment and delight in the evolution of Flat Creek Estate shows in her enthusiasm and initiative in many aspects of the business.

Enjoy some of Texas’ greatest wines and disc golf at this vibrant winery. And bring home their estate wines in your VGV®”

Wente Vineyards Estate Winery

Founded around 130 years ago, Wente Vineyards is the country’s oldest family-owned-operated winery. Currently managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family, the vineyards are located just east of San Francisco in Livermore Valley. The winery blends traditional and modern winemaking practices, and draws from about 3,000 acres of Estate vineyards to produce its award-winning fine wines. Look forward to enjoying wine tasting, fine dining and championship golf.

The winery offers two types of tasting experiences. One is via their Estate tasting room and the other, their Vineyard Tasting Room. The Estate tasting room offers tours of their facility, including the Small Lot Winery, with tastings of specially handcrafted, single vineyard, limited production wines. ,The Vineyard Tasting Room offers their current vintage wines in a cozy setting as well as a tour and tasting in the historic sandstone caves.

The legendary Greg Normandesigned Wente Vineyards’ 18-hole championship golf course for both the pro and novice golfer. As San Francisco Bay Area’s premier golf course, this extraordinary 7181-yard, par-72, upscale, daily-fee golf course in Livermore Valley winds through native woodlands, mature vineyards and rolling hills of natural grasslands. It has hosted the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship, part of the PGA Tour’s Nationwide Tour.

Karl D. Wente, Fifth Generation Winemaker, says,

“To me, I’m proud that my family has been committed to the soil and climate of Livermore Valley for five generations and Arroyo Seco since the 1960’s, and that we have always had a philosophy of delivering thoughtfully balanced, food-friendly wine, with a sense of place.”
I am incredibly proud of my family’s legacy with Chardonnay over the past 100 years; I look forward to continuing that tradition for generations to come.
…Chardonnay has become the #1 selling wine varietal in the US with almost 100,000 acres planted in California. With much of that Chardonnay originating from the original Wente clone, the family has certainly earned the title as “California’s First Family of Chardonnay™”.

An exceptional wine country experience awaits you at Wente Vineyards.

Chateau Elan Winery & Resort

Established in 1981, the Château Élan nestles in the north Georgia foothills, surrounded by lakes, with 40 acres of vineyards. It can be reached directly via Interstate 85 from downtown Atlanta and the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Breathtakingly beautiful, this golf resort offers 63 holes of championship golf, and is considered a major conference and leisure destination.

As one of the most award-winning wineries in the country over the past three years, the Chateau Elan has a premium lineup of wines including reserve white wines, reserve red wines, Muscadine wines, super premium wines, and specialty wines. Private winery tours and special packages are offered to visitors, along with a spa and wellness experience, cooking classes and world-class golf experience. Visit the Panoz Historic Racing Museum at the estate.

Referring to Simon Bergese, the website states:

“All of our wines undergo the same basic quality process, the difference between their final tear depends only by the natural “talent” that the wine will develop and show. Simone’s standards of grape quality allow him to work on a different level of winemaking, which is determined by the product, never by the market. His style and inputs definitely show on our wines but never overpower the true identity of the varieties.
The end results are wines that show complexity, sometimes elegant, sometimes powerful, sometimes they will remind you of your Southern grandmother’s backyard muscadine berries and other times they will remind you of Italy, or France, or Napa, or Spain…
As he says, it is not just about making or drinking wine, it is an emotional experience for you and a form of art for him.”

If you visit in summer, enjoy extra early tee times. If you are short on time, play a short course. Whatever you do, don’t forget to get your custom label designed at the winery before you leave with your VGV® filled with their specialty wines!

Eagle Vines Vineyards and Golf Club

Eagle Vines Vineyards and Golf Club is a premier 18-hole, par-72 golf course located in the foothills of Napa Valley, just an hour from Sacramento, San Francisco and Santa Rosa, and five miles southeast of Napa. As one of the few golf courses set in nature, Eagle Vines offers spectacular vineyard views.

World Golf Hall of Fame Johnny Miller designed this Napa Golf Club, offering a challenging yet enjoyable sensory experience. At every hole on the golf course, you can see stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. The course runs through gently rolling hills, stands of mature cherry and oak trees, waterfalls, and undulating creeks. While memberships are available, the golf course is open to the public.

Eagle Vines is one of the only golf courses with its own private-label estate wine. The winery’s estate grown Chardonnay, exclusive to the Eagle Vines Golf Club, comes from the holes on #11 and #12. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from the grapes grown on hole #7. The winery’s restaurant, The Grill, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a fully stocked bar, with panoramic views of the golf course.

Quoting from their website,

“Eagle Vines comingles a loving harmony of golf and nature. When you gaze upon the rolling hills, babbling creeks, shimmering waterfalls, working vineyards, glorious oaks, countless birds, and an occasional birdie, you will fully understand the essence of Eagle Vines.”

(…) New vintages just released 2014 Chardonnay and 2014 Chardonnay Reserve.  Also enjoy our 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.”

Give your senses a treat with a glass of their exclusive wine with views of the gorgeous vineyards.
